Kainuu is a wilderness region in eastern Finland, where activities range from the Vuokatti resort to fells and remote lakes. Vuokatti, Hossa National Park and Lake Oulujärvi create a setting for year-round Kainuu activities.
The region's main resort Vuokatti offers downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and spa experiences, while the surrounding region adds national parks, hiking routes and boating on Lake Oulujärvi.
The best Kainuu activities are found on city-level Top 10 lists, such as Vuokatti.
Kainuu has three national parks: Hossa, Hiidenportti and Tiilikkajärvi. Hossa is known for its clear waters, the Värikallio rock paintings and marked routes. Lake Oulujärvi offers boating, fishing and island trips in summer.
Winter is Kainuu's strongest season. Vuokatti Slopes, the Vuokatti ski tunnel and trail networks covering hundreds of kilometres serve skiers and snowboarders. The Paljakka and Ukkohalla slopes round out the offering.
The Vuokatti resort in Sotkamo offers slopes, a spa and the Vuokatti Sport training centre. Kajaani is the administrative centre with its castle ruins. Suomussalmi and Kuhmo round out the offering with Kalevala and war-history sites.
